Vegetable gardening is rewarding on many levels, and even for those who have not gardened before, success is attainable. Growing vegetables can be done almost anywhere, with the proper preparation.
First, consider different options for where to place the garden. Choose somewhere that is both convenient enough to receive the proper attention, and will also provide good growing conditions. The area will need to receive sunlight, and if in a region that may not get adequate rainfall, the garden should be close to an accessible water source.
Once the area has been chosen, it’s time to choose which vegetables to grow. Make a list of the plants that are most important for household needs. Find out the requirements for the top three to five plants on the list. This can include the amount of space needed between rows, the amount of water necessary, and so on. If there is room in the garden for additional plants, choose those from the list that will be compatible.
Prepare the area by removing sod and weeds. Research to find out the appropriate times to plant in the region. Keep the garden free of weeds, prune plants according to need, and experience the satisfaction of growing one’s own food.
