Consumers are making more choices based not only on product performance but on the philosophy behind them. Industries are answering this need by producing more options that are advertised as being natural and organic.
The beauty industry is no exception, filling shelves with increasing numbers of choices which purport to be better for the consumer and the environment by virtue of containing organic ingredients.

The cosmetic consumer who chooses organic products usually does so for one (or both) of the following reasons. First, organic products can be more environmentally friendly, as ingredients are farmed using sustainable methods and don’t utilize chemicals which harm the eco-system. Secondly, many beauty buffs are looking for products which expose their own skin and hair to fewer harmful chemicals.

But are they always getting what they pay for? Not necessarily.

Some products use only a small percentage of organic ingredients—the rest may be worse for the environment than components of standard products. Read labels carefully to be certain the organic stamp is not just a marketing ploy, and research companies to find one that has a good environmental report card.

Consumers should also be aware that organic products may contain ingredients not found in other cosmetics, and should be on the lookout for allergens that may irritate their skin.
